Geopark Meratus expanse ophiolite series is one of the oldest natural laboratories in Indonesia with a complex geological history. Located in South Kalimantan Province, the Meratus Mountains Geopark has become one of the icons of tourism and the pride of the people of South Kalimantan. Since November 2019, Meratus Geopark has become the first National Geopark on the island of Kalimantan. Geopark Meratus is divided into three clusters, namely Geoforest of Sultan Adam Mandiangin, Geodiversity of Ophiolite Series, and Geoforest of Cretaceous Loksado. In general, the Meratus Mountains are Ofiolite Mountains, which since the Paleogene have been located in an area far from the edges of plate convergence. The Meratus Mountains are composed of Ultramaphic, Malihan, and Melange rock groups and breakthroughs estimated to be Jura (150-200) Mya. until the Early/Lower Cretaceous (100 150) Mya, where this rock is the oldest rock that is the basis for the deposition of all rocks in the South Kalimantan region and is also one of the oldest rocks exposed in Indonesia.

The development potential of Meratus Geopark when viewed based on the SWOT matrix (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat). Strength of Meratus Geopark are the uniqueness of geology, biology, and culture with high intellectual value is an aesthetically educational asset to be developed. Local community are based on nature and culture. Socio-economic institutions that can manage and support activities in the Geopark. Weakness of Meratus Geopark are Infrastructure that still needs to be improved. Out-of-town access is still limited by Bus. Access to tourism knowledge is still limited. Funding sources are still centralized. The Opportunity of Meratus Geopark are geographical and population conditions still need to be developed. Geological, biological, and cultural potential. The increase in activities in the Geopark area will influence every line of life for the community, therefore it is very necessary to pay attention to aspects of science, aesthetics, culture, and spirituality as the identity that will shape the character of the Geopark, with this it is expected to improve the economic level of the surrounding community from tourism activities.

The cooperation of various parties and stakeholders is very necessary in terms of preparing, building and developing, and maintaining the sustainability of the geopark. In discussing sustainability development, the communities are the key to this, because it is the community that is the pillar supporting its sustainability. In addition, high community participation in activities has a high opportunity when viewed from the Human Development Index. Since 2018 the status of human development in South Kalimantan has increased from moderate to high levels. And in 2010 to 2021, the South Kalimantan Human Development Index increased by an average of 0.85 percent per year, from 65.20 in 2010 to 71.28 in 2021. The increase in the Human Development Index in 2021 is supported by all its constituent dimensions, both longevity and healthy living, knowledge, and a decent standard of living.

Community development opportunities certainly still have some problems and inhibiting factors, there is still a lack of knowledge and lack awareness of the community around the Meratus Geopark about how rich the potential of this Geopark is, therefore it is important to increase awareness of the community around the Meratus Geopark development area in terms of a sense of common ownership, things that can be done through an approach that is more acceptable to the community and providing information in an integrated-informative-interesting manner with simple language and a simple picture that can be easily accepted by the public. In addition, it provides training for the surrounding community for business development that can improve the economy of the community around the Meratus Geopark development area.

Instilling a sense of love and pride in the Meratus Geopark from an early age is one of the steps we can take to instill community awareness. This can be done by making the Meratus Geopark information packaged as attractive as possible for basic education students so that they know information about the Meratus Geopark from an early age, this is certainly expected to instill a sense of love and pride in the Meratus Geopark in South Kalimantan. The things conveyed above will certainly not be implemented properly without the integrity of intergovernmental cooperation from various parties and stakeholders to glorify the earth's heritage, to achieve community welfare.
