A good tradition of promoting geoheritage in Hungary are the events of the Geosite Days involving various sites and organizational bodies from all over the country on the first two weekends of October since 2009.

The Hungarian Geosite Day was established in 2009 to promote geoheritage through geo-guided tours and field educational games. Today the initiative has become a nationwide programme, and educational guided tours took place at more than 20 locations in 2021. This group of unique events are a good example of team work: organizing bodies with various background take part in the formation of the final programme. The cooperation is beyond geoparks: national parks, universities, scientific societies (e.g. the Hungarian Geological Society), and smaller local organisations organise guided tours - and all the work are coordinated by the ProGEO section of the Hungarian Geological Society.

The natural and cultural values of geosites are well-emphasised during these events - mostly led by volunteering experts. Unfortunately, the public awareness for geodiversity and geoheritage values is low in Hungary, but owing to these guided tours, many people were "educated" to take care and think about the scientific and sustainability message of the presented geosites. From year to year, the number of the tours and the visitors also increases: in 2021, more than 1200 visitors participated in at least one guided tour.

The mission of geoparks - emphasising the balance between society and nature - is well complemented by this series of events. This year, we try to complement these tours with a lecture day celebrating the first International Geodiversity Day in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
